Cynthia Wenz, President and CEO of the Source for Women, and Dominic Pedulla, M.D., President, The Edith Stein Foundation, jointly address the status of healthcare for the poor in Texas, especially women.
The state of Texas recently lost $200 million in federal funding for Medicaid’s Women’s Health Program (“WHP”) because Texas refused to grant those funds to healthcare providers that refer for abortions (i.e., Planned Parenthood). Governor Perry is also refusing to participate in the Medicaid expansion contemplated under the Affordable Care Act. So, the question arises: while there are many good and morally sound reasons for the state to take these actions, will these actions in fact cause harm to poor women (as well as of course men and children)? Here is an honest assessment of the issue, from a Catholic viewpoint.
