2018 Red Mass

The 2018 Red Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of the Diocese of San Francisco will be the Red Mass homilist, and Bishop Edward Burns will preside.

The Red Mass invokes the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the securing of justice for the coming year. We encourage attendance by all judiciary, attorneys, law faculty, and everyone interested in the rule of law.

Following the Red Mass there will be a dinner reception at the Dallas Petroleum Club across the street, which will include presentation of the St. Thomas More Award to the Honorable Amy Coney Barrett, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Honorable Amy Coney Barrett joined the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in November 2017. Before joining the bench, she taught at Notre Dame Law School, where she published many articles and students awarded her with the Distinguished Teaching Award twice.

Judge Barrett earned her J.D. from Notre Dame summa cum laude, and following that success clerked for Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the D.C. Circuit and then for Justice Scalia.

A model of faith and family as well, Judge Barrett displayed exemplary commitment to her Catholic faith in the face of criticism from a Senator during her confirmation hearings, and she and her husband, a federal prosecutor, have seven children.

Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone has been the Archbishop of the Diocese of San Francisco since 2012. He also serves as chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Defense of Marriage and is well-known and respected as a strong advocate of traditional marriage. He is also known as a strong leader in speaking in defense of religious liberty and the dignity of the human person in all stages of life.

Originally from San Diego, he was ordained a priest in 1982. In 1995, he was asked to serve in Rome as an assistant at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the Church’s highest canonical court. Then, in 2002, Pope John Paul II appointed Cordileone as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of San Diego. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to Bishop of Oakland in 2009, and three years later he was appointed Archbishop of San Francisco.

Archbishop Cordileone is a member of the Canonical Affairs and Church Governance Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops; the Board of Trustees, Catholic University of America; the Governing Board of the International Theological Institute; and the Subcommission on the Liturgy for the Anglican Ordinariates.
